Mahmoud Abouelkheir
Consortium Program: STEM Research Academy at Brooklyn College
PhD student, Chemical Biology | Johns Hopkins University
I consider myself a social person who loves meeting, working with, and forming connections personally and professionally. I have been interested in natural science research from a young age, and continue to pursue my interests at the interface of chemistry and biology with my current graduate program. I am also especially passionate about inequity and systematic barriers for under- represented students in STEM. I am happy to serve as a resource and mentor others wherever I can!

I have always had an interest in the sciences, and I am so excited to continue pursuing my degree, as there is so much to learn! I love communicating and forming new connections with others, as well as learning new things, which is why I am hoping to go to dental school after I finish my undergraduate degree. In my free time, I love running, especially during the school semester, as I find it to be the most stress-relieving activity, and I love reading books, so I am always interested in getting book recommendations!

I would describe myself as someone who is very sure in their wants and very persistent. I’m always coming up with random, spontaneous ideas whether that be for new events for the clubs that I’m a part of or weekend trips to go on with my friends. I also love having discussions or debates on whatever, mostly tv show hot takes but also on philosophical questions. I’m very easy to talk to and I’m always down for a funny story.

Astronomy had always intrigued me as a child. I was always interested in our terrestrial discoveries, but I found myself even more compelled by what was yet undiscovered and the concept of being able to take theoretical knowledge and put it to the test. This passion for astronomy and astrophysics has formed the backbone of my passions, and ultimately my career and educational pursuits, as they stand. From a more personal perspective, I am the person my friends always go to for a piece of advice and a good laugh. My free time is usually spent with my family around a good meal or watching the latest episode of Love is Blind.

I am currently studying at the University Centre of the Westfjords in Ísafjörður, Iceland. I would describe myself as someone who is eager to get involved and do as many things as I have time for! I am a freelance reporter for a couple local newspapers and I try to write about science and sustainability whenever possible.I am also fascinated by the international aspect of environmental policy and the complex relationships between climate legislation (or lack thereof) in a nation and the resulting impacts worldwide. I love to travel and learn about other places and cultures, there is nothing I enjoy more than traveling off the beaten path. I love to hear about others' travel experiences and stories from other countries.

Senior, Anthropology, Urban & Environmental Studies | Princeton University
I’m passionate about using anthropology to understand the intersections of urban and environmental studies, though I don’t have a good answer yet to the age-old question of: “So, what do you want to do after you graduate?” The current answer I’m giving is something in urban planning or urban policy, though I feel like that answer changes every year. At school, I’m involved with the Student Advisory Board for the campus Art Museum, the step dancing team, and Outdoor Action, the outdoorsy, goes-on- backpacking-and-hiking-trips club. I am also the proud owner of five houseplants and love visiting museums in my free time!
