Overview
- The Fellow will support Hudson River Park's environmental education and cultural programs for their direct service work, and focus on developing a proposal and piloting educational elements for the Park's future Estuarium for their strategic project work.
Direct Service
- The Fellow will help people of all ages explore the Hudson River through the Park’s education and cultural programs. What they learn in this work will also inform their strategic project: developing a proposal and piloting educational activities for the Park’s future Estuarium.
The Fellow will:
- Teach and create. Lead year-round field trips and drop-in programs at the Pier 40 Wetlab aquarium, Pier 57 Discovery Tank, Gansevoort Peninsula, and other Park sites. In year two, develop new lessons and activities for field trips and Park-wide events, and train seasonal staff and interns to lead them.
- Mentor young people. Support students in the Science Leadership Program through workshops that build leadership and STEM skills. In year two, help plan new workshops and field trips.
- Connect people with the Park. Host free tours, family events, and art programs. Support animal care and community science projects that track the health of the Estuarine Sanctuary, then train seasonal staff and interns in the Park’s research methods in year two.
Strategic Project
- The Fellow will help imagine how visitors might learn and explore at the Park’s future Estuarium, a research facility, classroom, and aquarium focused on the Hudson River estuary. Guided by themes and priorities set by River Project staff, they’ll develop and test ideas for educational activities and exhibits that welcome people of different ages, languages, abilities, and learning styles. Groundbreaking is anticipated in 2028.
The Fellow will:
- Learn from other spaces. Visit museums and science centers, speak with their teams, and draw on those relationships for feedback as the proposal takes shape.
- Try ideas with visitors. Test activities, displays, or graphics at the Pier 40 Wetlab and Pier 57 Discovery Tank. In year one, explore early concepts and gather feedback from staff and visitors through surveys and other methods. In year two, refine the ideas and include what they learn in a final proposal.
- Help shape the Estuarium. Join meetings about its educational approach and exhibits, bringing attention to access for different audiences. In year two, plan and host an event to share the final proposal, including its outreach, promotion, and setup.
